It looks like the identity of Marvel's latest supervillain is no longer a mystery.

Though it's only been a rumor until now, the actor behind the villain has now confirmed he's definitely not playing Peter Parker in the next Marvel Cinematic Universe installment,Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Here's what we know about the movie's casting so far, who will play the movie's main villain, and when you can expect to see Spider-Man's next solo adventure in theaters.

Spider-Man: Far From Homecast: What we know so far

Since Marvel's films produced under Disney are all connected, actors often sign multi-film, multi-year deals when agreeing to play a certain character. Robert Downey Jr., for example, has been playing the same character in the films (Iron Man) since 2008.

(It has not been determined whether or not he will appear inFar From Home, but we won't speculate about anyInfinity War aftermath … yet.)

We know for sure that Tom Holland — who joined the MCU in 2017 — will reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in both theSpider-Man sequel and Marvel's continuation ofAvengers: Infinity War.

Other returning cast members include Michael Keaton (Vulture), Zendaya (Michelle), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury).

Who will play the next Marvel villain?

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal hasn't been on Instagram long. But he made sure his first-ever post on the platform wasn't one his followers would want to miss.

In the post, Gyllenhaal announced that he would be joining the newSpider-Man film — but not as the character of Spider-Man.

Instead, Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio, the main supervillain raging against Tom Holland in the 2019 film. Mysterio has been plotting to take over the world since 1964 when he first appeared in an issue ofThe Amazing Spider-Mancomic. He was co-created by Stan Lee, who died earlier this year.

Gyllenhaal seems perfect for the role — though unlike the former aspiring Hollywood star who left his ambitions behind to pursue supervillain affairs, Gyllenhaal has had a successful career. His acting credits date back to the early 199os.

Does Sony'sSpider-Man sequel have a release date?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will complete its third "phase" of films in 2019 with a yet-to-be-named Avengers sequel in May. Like its preceding film,Spider-Man: Far From Home will debut in July and will continue the superhero narrative.

However, this is technically not part of Disney's insane lineup of films releasing next year. Spider-Man: Homecoming and the movies that follow it are part of the MCU, meaning their stories coincide with movies produced by Marvel and its parent company, Disney.

They're distributed by Sony, though, and co-produced by Marvel Studios and Columbia Pictures. Disney has no involvement in these projects, since Spider-Man is technically owned by Sony and the company has creative and financial control over the character in films and other media.

This is why a Spider-Man movie will hit theaters in December 2018 but will not be connected to the MCU.

The movie hits theaters in the U.S. on July 5, 2019.
